WLAM Fundraiser

About The Night

The event is a night of live music, a DJ set, comedy and drama. The purpose of the evening is to raise funds for our Walk Like A Man production, that has a short run in August.

Most people don’t realise that the costs attached to a theatre production are substantial. A lot of productions are funded by national development and funding agencies but, because we had a lot of skills in-house, we decided that we should use these and effectively sing for our supper.

The night will run from 7pm until midnight and will alternate between the various parts of the show, with the band performing in two slots, finishing in the run up to midnight. There are also some amazing things to be won on the night, so get yourself along and let us entertain you.

Live Music

The Freee Amigos came together to play a few gigs for good causes. Basically, a bunch of friends that were all in music and wanted to take the opportunity to play together whilst also helping out some good causes. With so much interest in the band it seems that those few gigs might not be the end of the road for the Freee Amigos.

The band line up is:
Lynn Huntley – vocals
Steven Lowes – bass/guitar/vocals
Andy Mather – guitars
Iain Thompson – guitar/keyboards
Michael Mather – drums

The band will be joined by guest vocalists Silver, James Craister and Kas Hasani, who will be singing a few numbers and doing some backing vocals.

The band will also be joined by some guest singers including Silver, Kas Hasani and James Craister and, who knows, there could be more. The history of the band goes back to 1983/84 when Steven and Andy played in a band called Time & Blue together. Michael is Andy’s son, Lynn is a professional singer, and Jake is a solo artist gigging and recording his original retro-synth material. On the night, the band will play a set of classic songs from across the decades and there will be something for everyone in there.

Drama

Between the live music there will be some scenes performed by actors involved in various projects, just to give you a better idea of what the projects that we are funding are about. There’s some drama and plenty of comedy, and like the music there is going to be something for everyone. Amongst the material to be performed are:

Walk Like A Man
This is the production that the fundraising is for.
Mick and Michelle have two grown up sons, Nick and Jack. Both are plumbers, but that’s about where the similarities end. Like his dad, Nick is football mad and loves a boozy night on the tiles. Jack, however, is different. And he has a secret. A tale about families, plumbing and drag. Oh, and the not so small matter of the takeover Newcastle United. Despite being the youngest, Jack’s had enough of the drunken nights out and needs more cultural pursuits: film, theatre or a bit of live music are his passions. And as for football, well, he doesn’t know a corner from a corner shop, or a throw in from a lock in. With his girlfriend now an ex, Jack has to deal with an adoring mother, and her best friend, saucy “Auntie” Sue. Thankfully, he has found an ally in workmate “Uncle” Derek. When plumbing’s a drag, walk like a man.

Knuckleheeds
Matty Burke is a retired bank robber. He now considers himself to be going straight, as he runs his secondhand shop that just happens to be the biggest fencing operation in the area. By his side is his young assistant, Ted Hazard. Between them they only just manage to get through daily life, as with every perfect opportunity there seems to be an ever-better prepared pitfall to scupper their plans. With Matty having to carry out one last blag to repay an old debt, the prospects aren’t good. Particularly as these days, there’s no crack team of fearless highly-skilled bandits, just hazardous Ted, Am-Dram enthusiast Laurence Savena and new to the area mystic, Tarquin Moreau. The waters are further muddied when psychotic former-bandit Billy Shillings shows up, with his now-distorted grasp of reality.

Outside The Box
When the end of season holiday fund goes missing from a local veterans’ football team stash, the heat is on to track down the missing money. Even after calling in all their favours including connections with the old bill, there’s still no sign of the missing money. Commiserating, they decide to drown their sorrows for a night around town where, as is usual, the wheels come off in spectacular fashion. Could a chance conversation in a notoriously sleazy club be the answer to their problems, and get them on the plane for their end of season knees up?

DJ Set

Wayne C McDonald
We are so lucky that one of the actors is top local DJ Wayne C McDonald. Wayne plays Darquin (Tarquin Moreau) in Knuckleheeds and will be playing a set before the band comes back on. Wayne has DJ’d for some of the biggest names in the business and will be helping to keep things moving after the drama performances are done.
