Derek Owen
Derek and Mick are best pals. They’ve been pals for over twenty years, since Derek, or Dek, to his pals, and his wife moved in close to Mick and his family, somewhat unexpectedly. Derek’s wife, Sue, is also Mick’s wife Michelle’s closest friend, so they usually share conversations about the same things. Like Mick and his boys, Derek is a plumber, although he never seems as invested in the trade as Mick does. To Derek, it’s a means to an end, and although he never says so, plumbing just happened to him whilst looking for his real purpose in life.
Sue has a constant, carnal, craving for her man and over the years Derek has become adept at dodging Sue’s burning desires. This is particularly the case when he’s got a pint of Guinness in his hand, and a bit of dutch courage, for which he inevitably pays for when she eventually catches up with him.
Derek is a huge music fan and loves something from every genre. Generally affable, he publicly goes with the flow. Whether at work or when out with Mick, as long as there’s music, Derek’s happy. At home things are different – him and Sue love to crank up the tunes, where it can be anything from Buena Vista Social Club to Showtunes, but it’s never run of the mill. Derek’s other favourite songs are sung at St James’s Park, every other week, when he goes to watch Newcastle United with the lads. He and Mick spend their time discussing and debating the fortunes of their beloved football team.
